According to a report by Financial Times, Meta seems to be planning to incorporate displays into its well-known Ray-Ban smart glasses. These screens might appear in a future version of the device as soon as next year, with a probable release in the latter half of 2025.
Sources familiar with Meta's plans indicate that the screens will be relatively small and are expected to show notifications or responses from Meta's AI virtual assistant. It's very unlikely that the company intends to develop this into a complete mixed-reality device at this time.
To achieve this, Meta has introduced the newly-revealed Orion AR glasses, which are still a few years away from release. The report suggests that the favorable reaction to the Orion glasses has probably sped up their development and potentially secured their commercial launch. It was previously uncertain whether these glasses would stay as an internal prototype.
The Ray-Ban smart glasses have unexpectedly become a success for Meta, and it's clear why. They have an appealing design and function well. The latest version features in-ear speakers, cameras, microphones, and access to Meta's virtual assistant.
