Google's NEW Quantum Computing Chip: Is Crypto Safe?

The Quantum AI team at Google claims that their latest quantum computing chip can solve a computational problem in under five minutes, a task that would require approximately 10 septillion years for one of the top supercomputers to complete.

Hartmut Neven, the head of Google's Quantum AI, mentioned in a blog on December 9 that the Willow chip is capable of exponentially correcting errors and executing certain computations at an astonishing speed.

“This mind-boggling number exceeds known timescales in physics and vastly exceeds the age of the universe,” he said. A qubit, or quantum bit, serves as a fundamental unit of information essential to quantum computing; having more qubits enhances computational power. However, increasing the number of qubits also raises the likelihood of errors.

When error rates are excessively high, the computation becomes unreliable and generates incorrect outcomes, posing challenges in scaling the technology for practical, large-scale application.
