President Joe Biden has issued an executive order to accelerate the building of data centers across the United States. This order emphasizes the advancement of domestic AI infrastructure and details the White House's strategies for enhancing national security while also tackling environmental issues such as clean energy production.
A crucial aspect of the order is that by early 2025, both the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy are required to identify three appropriate locations each for "frontier AI data centers."
The President defined "frontier AI data centers" as establishments "able to be utilized to create, within a reasonable period, an AI model with features related to either its performance or the computational resources involved in its development that roughly equal or exceed the current state of the art at the time the AI model is developed."
President Biden stated that as part of the planned data center expansion, operators must align their electricity usage hourly with clean energy sources such as geothermal, nuclear, wind, and solar.
A few days before transferring office to Donald Trump, amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions, Biden also stated that campuses should enforce strict physical and cyber security measures, extending further along the supply chain.
Vice President Kamala Harris stated that the executive order revealed today will guarantee that the United States possesses the infrastructure—comprising large-scale data centers and clean power facilities—needed to uphold America's competitive edge and protect our national security interests.
